My journey to a global finance hub: commuting to Canary Wharf

My day begins with a 30-minute commute to the UCL School of Management’s Canary Wharf campus. Living in west London, near Victoria Station, I take the efficient London Underground – the Victoria Line to Green Park, followed by a quick transfer to the Jubilee Line towards Canary Wharf. This daily journey is a quintessential London experience and a small trade-off for studying in such a dynamic location.

Daily life within a financial hotspot

Arriving in Canary Wharf is always a unique experience. The towering, modern skyscrapers immediately convey a strong sense of the global finance industry. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by the offices of giants like HSBC, Citi, and J.P. Morgan.

The area feels like a contemporary city centre – clean, organised, and buzzing with ambition. You’ll see professionals in suits, moving with purpose, discussing deals in bustling cafes during their lunch breaks. This serious yet exciting atmosphere perfectly embodies the financial world I envisioned and now study within.

Studying with quite a view: The UCL Campus at One Canada Square

The UCL School of Management’s campus is strategically located on Levels 38 and 50 of the iconic One Canada Square. Imagine attending lectures with breathtaking panoramic views of the Thames and the sprawling London cityscape! Our MSc Finance lectures typically last three hours.

The timetable varies between terms, with most first-term classes starting in the early afternoon (12:30 p.m.), while the second term offers greater flexibility with morning, afternoon, and evening sessions. I make it a point to arrive early, allowing myself time to review materials and mentally prepare for the class.

Our professors foster a highly interactive learning environment, actively engaging students in discussions and debates. During breaks, it’s common to step out for a quick refreshment, chat with classmates, or simply take a moment by the window to absorb the incredible views from our high-rise campus.

This unique learning environment truly sets the UCL School of Management experience apart.

Lunch and learning to fuel my studies

On class days, lunchtime is usually spent exploring the diverse range of restaurants conveniently located just downstairs from One Canada Square. It’s a great opportunity to connect with classmates in a relaxed setting.

After lunch, I often return to the dedicated study room on the 50th floor to focus on assignments or review lecture notes. Sometimes, I prefer the atmosphere of one of the many cafes in Canary Wharf for independent study. I find studying alone helps me maintain concentration and manage my study schedule effectively.

Taking time away from my books to explore what London has to offer

Weekends are my time to explore the incredible city of London. The city offers something for everyone! I enjoy experiencing everything that London’s culture has to offer, like the British Museum and the National Gallery, or indulging in some retail therapy on Oxford Street.

As a football enthusiast and a Chelsea supporter, I also seize any chance to catch a live match in London’s stadium atmosphere.

Student life in London is truly about balancing academic pursuits with the rich cultural and social experiences the city has to offer.

My experience as an international student in a welcoming and diverse UCL community

As an international student in London, I immediately felt welcomed by the city’s diverse and friendly atmosphere. In Canary Wharf and across London, you’ll hear a multitude of languages, and you’ll encounter people from every corner of the globe.

This international spirit is mirrored within the UCL School of Management, where my classmates hail from various countries and backgrounds. Despite our different languages and cultures, there’s a strong sense of mutual respect and curiosity, making group projects and class discussions incredibly enriching and enjoyable.

The School of Management also organises welcome events, workshops, and student clubs, which significantly helped me feel connected and engaged from the start. UCL is known for its diverse student body, creating a truly global learning environment.

Learning to balance studying and life: my weekly routine and advice for future students

During the weekdays, my primary focus is on my studies. This involves attending all lectures promptly, diligently learning new material, and completing assignments on schedule. I also prioritise my well-being by finding the time to fit in badminton or gym sessions into my routine to maintain a healthy balance between mind and body.

Weekends are for unwinding, whether it’s exploring London’s attractions or venturing to nearby towns. This break is crucial for recharging and preparing for the upcoming academic week.

For prospective MSc Finance students, my advice is to create a structured weekly plan. Even with a seemingly light class schedule, the workload can be demanding. Sticking to your plan and consistently tackling your studies throughout the week is key. Avoid leaving everything until the exams, as this will inevitably lead to unnecessary stress.

Remember to also prioritise rest and leisure – a balanced approach is essential for success and enjoying your time in London!
